HATE THE WAY YOU LOVE ME
And I hate the way you see me
Like a man who can't be fixed
Like a fool fooling all but you
Who he really is
And I hate the way you hold me
Nervous as a cat
Like I might give in the big idea
You'd forgive me just like that
I wouldn't have it any other way
Heaven knows a sinner needs a saint
Oh but when I've been at my most ugly
I hate the way you love me
You're a hard woman to live with
I could never fill those shoes
An example for our children
I could never live up to
And I hate myself for staying
Where I should and should not be
Someone I know I don't deserve
And doesn't deserve me
I wouldn't have it any other way
Heaven knows a sinner needs a saint
Oh but when I've been at my most ugly
I hate the way you love me
I wouldn't have it any other way
Heaven knows a sinner needs a saint
And I love your everything-I-ain't
But I hate the way
Yes, I hate the way
You love me

Beautiful, beautiful song!! Country songs have always been my favorite kind of music to listen to. Soothing. Simple but deep.
John Paul White really is a gifted musician, artist. Really! Extra point because he's Johny Depp's doppelgänger! LOL! Anyway, he's best simply by being himself. There's nothing fancy in his lyrics nor his melodies whats more his personality. Though country isn't the only music he does/did, I personally think he shines more with this genre. But hey, after all, music is music, it's infinitely revolutionary.
Here's my interpretation of this song.
This song has a melancholic tone and mood to it, like the feeling we have when we're under the dark cloudy sky. It somehow expresses nervousness in a relationship which looks robust exteriorly but is actually very vulnerable inside. The lyrics, almost each lines are wreathed with the sense of guilt. By having these conflicting thoughts and feelings, he's indeed facing tremendous amount of cognitive dissonance. Hence, this song might be his best way of catharsis for him.
Here are some of his other great songs that I enjoy:
